I’ve been on the Chatter Desktop team almost since I joined Salesforce.com. 2 years later we’re on the third major release. Chatter Desktop enables users to use a Desktop client to access Salesforce Chatter.

Updates on the people, projects, and files that you care about most are automatically pushed to you, so you always know what’s going on.
The first version of the Desktop supported simple feed browsing, posting and commenting, following people and joining groups. One major feature of Desktop are toaster notifications, which enable users to stay on top of their feed. With version 2 we did a major UI and visual revamp which was received very positively by our users. We also added the ability to follow records and changed the feed structure quite a bit to make it more accessible.
Version 3 is adding Customer groups and private messaging to the app.
